A PicPocket Book in Action!

How can you keep a child busy and occupied while running errands, waiting in the doctor’s office, or just driving in the car?  I found my answer in Cucumber Soup, one of PicPocket Book’s newest editions for reading-on-the go.

"I like this story!"

"I like this story!"

One of the things that makes Cucumber Soup so entertaining for young children is that they can recognize all of the insects that appear on the digital pages.  Spiders, ants, and bumblebees  flutter and crawl across each page as the message of teamwork and persistence is taught to the young reader.
As I gave my iPod Touch to the young boy I was babysitting, I could hear him shout “bumblebees!” and “ladybugs!” as he enthusiastically identified the bugs and listened as the story progressed. I could tell by his excited squeals that Cucumber Soup would entertain him for the entire duration of our trip to the grocery store.

Do you have any suggestions for keep children busy and occupied during boring car rides and errands?  Do you believe children would enjoy being read to on an iPod Touch or iPhone rather than watching a DVD in the car?  Let us know what educational tools you try to provide for your children!

I have 3 granddaughters under 8 that I recently had for an extended time in a car, and an iPod with stories or activities would’ve been a lifesaver! In the past, we would carry books with us, but the condition of the books were severely abused even for a short time in the car. An activity on the iPod that 2-3 children could do could be an idea…is there something like that available?

PicPocket Books are great for the car. Before we started using PicPocket Books in the car, we, too had some “car books” but they did get pretty beat up. They’d end up on the floor of the car, and then inevitably someone would step on them with muddy shoes on rainy day. As far as an activity for 2-3 kids, they could always take turns passing the device around whether it was a game playing on the iPhone or a book. The iPhone really is best suited for one person at a time regardless of what you are using it for (phone, games, apps, movies, or reading picture books.) For story time with multiple kids, a print book is still the best time-tried option!

  3. I think this is a great idea. We carry books in the car. I usually hand my son my phone to try and keep him occupied. We have to change books out they get really roughed up in the car.
