As parents, we find it difficult to just disconnect. We got our kids into helping enforce our rules about checking devices constantly/being online : we printed out simple business size cards with the words "GET OFF NOW!" Our kids then can give these to mom and dad whenever we are not following OUR own rules. 2 cards in one day means mom has to clean the kids room. More than 2 cards per week, and it's breakfast in bed for the kids.

I like your comment about not constantly checking our own devices, and setting an example. If my smartphone is around I tend to check it. So I find that turning it off, or just leaving it in another room when it's family time is sometimes the best policy. Thanks for these insights Lynette!
